Gen Z Divides ‘Too Extra’ 1990s Christmas Decor Trend: ‘Too Old’

‘Tis the season to be “tacky”—and millennials love it.

The delights of the 1990s are ringing up to the wonderful Christmas decor of yesteryear, reviving the maximalist trimming of trees with big red bows, lights and twinkling lights.

But the comeback yuletide trend is garnering mixed reactions from the often Grinchy Gen Zers, who are used to modest, aesthetically pleasing decorating rather than the flashy glitz of yesteryear.

“Nostalgic ’90s Christmas decor is making a comeback and I’m here for it,” said Miranda Renee, a married mother of three, as she showed off her viewing tree on TikTok.

The evergreen — decorated with colorful string lights, ornaments and paper snowman cutouts — served as the centerpiece of Renee’s living room, which was covered in tinsel and pretty lights, and featured village charters of Christmas and a plastic figurine of Santa.

“Someone came into my house and said, ‘It makes me think of my childhood,'” Renee wrote in the caption of the post. “And that’s exactly what I was going for.”

However, not everyone is buzzing about the very cheerful and bright decorations.

While Gen Z teens and twenty-somethings seem to be obsessed with 90s and 2000s fads, such as Y2K-era plush furnishings and vintage digital cameras, it seems Zoomers are divided when it comes to to embrace the sights of gingerbread Christmas.

Dawn Hayward’s daughter was almost blown away by the spectacle of their ’90s-themed holiday scene.

“Bella, what have you done”, asked the astonished youth in a viral video with over 4.9 million views. “It’s so extra.”

“That’s too much extra,” echoed an equally confused commenter.

“She won’t invite her friends over,” said another. Others considered the look too “old school”.

But no matter how hard they try to make a splash and fight the immodest movement, the bright sheen of ’90s trim is likely here to stay – thanks to tasteful digital tastemakers for gluing it all together.

“This year, for our Christmas theme, we’re going full, colorful, 90s, tacky, sexy,” mom Maisie Isabella said in a clip of her party.

“You can’t look at it and be sad,” she said as she admired her extravagantly decorated tree.

Erica Sally, a married mother, followed suit separately, racking up over 1.8 million views on her pre-millennial footage.

“My husband wanted a Christmas tree to remind him of his childhood,” she said. “So I decorated our tree with a ’90s theme.”

Lori Watton, a sports presenter from Northern Ireland, echoed those sentiments in her striking style.

“The one thing I was early for, brought back the 90s funky lights this year,” she said. “And I love it.”
