Age isn’t just a number when it comes to the grocery bill.
A shopper felt terribly age-shamed after realizing a supermarket had given them a “senior discount” even though they were under 50, as documented in an eyebrow-raising post on Reddit.
“Checked my bill after noticing discount after discount to find this … I’m 48,” the upset customer exclaimed in the caption of the post, which was shared on the forum’s “gentle angry start”.
The attached photo shows the document, with “SENIOR DISCOUNT” in big letters at the top.
Meanwhile, there’s a slight price reduction on every item, including corned beef brisket ($0.69 off), natural honey bacon ($0.15), fruit juice ($0.12), blueberries ($0.15) and peeled baby carrots ($0.10)
That brought the total discount to $2.05 off the overall bill, which cost the shopper $50.75 for 11 items when factoring in the age-based discount.
While this concession wasn’t exactly theft, the user was scorned given that they were well below the threshold for being a senior citizen – which is generally considered 65 in the US.
However, Reddit users accused the buyer of looking a gift horse in the mouth.
“I mean that’s a win in my book, getting a discount you don’t deserve,” one declared, while another wrote: “Yeah, it’s a little annoying to lose a discount you deserve. Getting one you don’t it’s free money.”
A third theorized that a food worker had given shoppers the senior discount as a favor to them, despite knowing they were not the required age.
“I can just imagine a cashier thinking ‘hell yeah, I’m going to save so much money because this hellhole doesn’t pay me enough!'” they scoffed. “Then someone is upset that someone gave them a discount that meant that they are old. Hell, I’d be happy to be called a Pickle Thief for a 5% Pickle Thief discount.
One Redditor even told a story about getting a senior citizen discount just because they were a loyal customer.
“I travel for work and hit the same bakery every day for breakfast and my friend started giving me the senior citizen discount because I tipped well,” they claimed. “I was 30 at the time.”
Furthermore, while a 48-year-old does not qualify as a senior citizen in most cases, he is not entirely outside the realm of reason.
Some stores such as Fred Meyer, Hyvee and Fry’s Food Stores offer discounts to shoppers who are 55 and older.
Meanwhile, customers only need to be 50 years old to receive this price benefit at some chain restaurants like Krispy Kreme, Steak ‘n Shake and Cici’s Pizza, though the latter offer varies by location.
